Lulu Li Winner of inaugural GAM Gilbert de Botton Art Prize
Lulu Li has won the inaugural GAM Gilbert de Botton Art Prize for new talent. The Chelsea College of Art and Design student was selected for her series of five temporal installations and was presented with the award at the opening of the College’s annual postgraduate show.
MA Fine Art student Li transformed her studio space into a gallery – each day creating a unique show lasting for one day only. Working with everyday objects, each installation was a reaction to the space itself, exploring the narratives between situation, space and object.
Li was deemed most likely to significantly impact the contemporary art world by the judging panel, including collector Alex Sainsbury, Haunch of Venison curator Nina Miall, artist Gary Hume, art critic Louisa Buck and GAM Director, Jeremy Smouha. She was recognised for her outstanding aesthetic ability and subtle yet assured work. Beating off fierce competition from fellow students at Chelsea College of Art and Design, Li receives £5,000 from GAM to help nurture her talent and develop her work in the early stages of her career.
GAM is a committed supporter of the arts and emerging artists. In addition to awarding the Gilbert de Botton Art Prize, GAM are offering financial support to the College. They are also lending their support to Future Map 2010, the annual exhibition of the best emerging talent from the current graduating year at University of the Arts London

Today I found out an amazing designer Lulu Li. She designed a series of figures called Lightning baby. She took the 1950’s Chinese female gymnastics figure as an inspiration and combined it with modern motion graphic design. It is such a great twist in terms of the quality of design and the color choice. She said in the 1950’s, when his mom was a very young woman, her dress, hairstyle, green uniform, scarlet cheeks, energetic voice and music, all became vivid memories of his childhood. Lulu is also a muti-talented artist. Now the products designed by her are only exclusively sold in Beijing and Shanghai.

Lightning Babe, by Lulu (Li Xinlu), is a modern twist on the 1950′s Chinese female gymnastics figure, similar dress, hairstyle, green uniform, pink cheeks, energetic voice and music. The works celebrates also the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. The old Communist style gyms are rapidly being replaced by swanky western-style gyms with their slick exclusive membership system. Many memories of this Communist era are lost because of the heavy cost of rapid development. The Lightning Babe works range from posters, animated wallpaper for projections, small sculptures, bags, clothing, and emoticons for MSN, cushions, etc.

Lulu is a young motion/graphic designer based in Beijing. The banner motion graphic design for Get It Louder, which had been featured on Shift until recently, was also by her. She is a very active designer with so many works with clients, but she is also active with her own work as well. We interviewed Lulu, who is currently having an exhibition at the 789 Art District, which is also featured on Shift. read more
