“All About Village” 2009 Game

This game first took place at a new shopping mall in Beijing called “The Village”. “The Village” has a public area with a large scale LED display where people gather and hipsters hang out. This small square is surrounded by the largest Apple store in Beijing, Starbucks, Uniqlo, and Addidas flagship stores. This is a perfect place for a social networking game. We called this game “All about Village”. We designed more than 20 characters for people to choose and play with. The list of characters included: alien, Batman, Lacoste alligator,  George W Bush, Obama, Bin Laden, village girl, pervert man, bikini chics, Lightning Babes, team of grandmas on exercise machines etc. People sms-ed a public number with their choice of character, and sms-ed “2,4,6,8″ to navigating themselves , once they bumped into each other virtually, they could start a conversation again through sms. Also they could simply sms a Chinese word to call up emoticons, like: happy, angry, support, shocked. The characters, the movements and the messages are all displayed on the LED screen. It was fun to see the character players and the conversations they had with each other being completely out of the original context.
